Carry On Gardening
What is ‘Carry On Gardening’?
WHAT TO EXPECT
If you are an older person, living in the area, and would like to learn skills, meet friends, relax and chat over a cuppa, our project is just for you!
We offer sessions for people with Dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke, brain-injury and other conditions at the walled garden or in community/care settings.
WANT TO VOLUNTEER?
As a LOCAL project for LOCAL people we also need:
- People to join our steering group and contribute ideas
- Volunteers of all ages interested in working with older people to help support sessions
- Garden volunteers to maintain our borders and garden especially designed for older people
Branching Out – Growing Together is funded by a grant over two years from money raised by HealthIntend through The Health Lottery.
ActivGardens Development Manager
I have spent the past five years developing the People’s Community Garden from an abandoned area of allotment site into the thriving community resource it is today. I am now focusing attention on Chantry Walled Garden, building up the horticultural and life skills programme for young adults with complex needs, and developing the site to provide opportunities for volunteers and older people. My job with ActivLives represented quite a career jump – as an English graduate, I worked for many years as a journalist in London and Melbourne before settling on the Essex/ Suffolk border with my husband and three children in 1995. While working as a sub editor at the East Anglian Daily Times, I decided to study for an RHS Diploma in Horticulture at Writtle College. I briefly ran a gardening business with a colleague, before landing a job with the Town & Bridge Project, now ActivLives, in 2008.
