ActivSteps is a low impact dance session, using specially designed gentle and fun moves, seated and standing, to music that will help improve strength, co-ordination, balance and stamina. You don’t need a partner and you don’t need to be a brilliant dancer. You just need to be ready to have fun.
The instructor also includes some specific OTAGO exercise, which will help people improve their strength and balance, as well as enjoying the dance, music and singing along to the classics.
The routines have all been specially developed so that they are effective but safe. They don’t involve any twists, jumps, sharp turns or complicated steps. Everyone works at their own level and there are always alternative moves to take account of individual needs and ability.
ActivLives currently runs two ActivSteps sessions in Ipswich and at the end of the one-hour session, there’s the opportunity to have a chat and a cuppa and make new friends. Sessions cost £5.00 including refreshments.
What our members say:
“There are some weeks when I might think Oh I’m not sure if I want to do it, but I come and have a go and I always feel better afterwards. It just makes you feel happy.”
“I come to support my Mum. She’s 80 and walking is difficult for her. But what a difference the sessions make for her. Her walking has improved and she can walk on her own unaided for longer. I can see the difference it’s made in her balance and co-ordination. Her walking has improved so much and that has improved her confidence. It really does do her so much good. And they’re such a lovely crowd of people. We’ve all become friends.
I enjoy myself as well. While I’m doing it I can just relax and forget about all my other stresses and worries and just focus on moving. It creates some space in my brain and lifts my spirits.”
“I just love ActivSteps. I love the music and I love the dances we do. The music always makes you want to tap your feet and get going It’s never too fast or too complicated. I enjoy our Halloween and Christmas “specials”.
“It’s a great group and a great way to exercise. We all get along so well. We’ve started to socialise outside the group as well and have been out for meals together.”
“It definitely keeps me fit. The dances are fun and the strength and balance exercises are really good. You can see yourself improving week by week and you realise how much easier it is to do things at home as you improve. I feel much more confident now.”
