Moving Forward works with former family carers in the community to help them create an active and fulfilling life for themselves after their caring role has finished.
MOVING FORWARD – AN ACTIVHUBS PROJECT
HOW CAN IT HELP YOU?
Looking after a loved one with a serious illness or disability takes up time and energy, often to the exclusion of almost everything else in someone’s life. When that caring role finishes, when the person who was being looked after dies or moves into residential or nursing care, life can change significantly. Days that were busy and full of people and activity can suddenly become empty, long and lonely with no obvious purpose. A gap is left that is hard to fill.
Moving Forward is a one to one support service specially designed to help people build a new, active and fulfilling life for themselves after caring. It enables them to review what’s going on in their life, think about what they would like to do next and decide on the action they can take to achieve it.
The service has been developed by listening to and working with people who were looking after people, health and social care practitioners and community and voluntary groups who have experience in these areas.
The aim of the service is to create a practical way forward, based on the particular areas of life which can have the greatest impact in helping people move on.
WE CAN HELP YOU WITH:
Coping with loss and bereavement
Recreation and leisure activities
Living a healthy lifestyle
Learning, training and employment
As well as tackling any difficult issues, people are always encouraged to do more of the things that they enjoy in life.
All information shared in the service is dealt with in the strictest confidence.
There is an informal one to one discussion with a member of the Moving Forward team during which someone can talk about how their life is at the moment and how they would like it to be.
The team help with information and advice about local opportunities and options and then help the former carer identify and develop the steps needed to help them achieve their ambitions after caring.
People are encouraged to move at their own pace in their own way so that any plans made are personal to them and achievable.
Further catch up meetings can then be held to review progress.
The Moving Forward team can offer advice and information in most areas, but if someone would like more specialised help in an area e.g..bereavement counselling, they will be directed to an appropriate local service that can help them.
The service is free and all meetings will take place at a time and in a venue which is convenient for the client.

ActivGardens Development Manager
I have spent the past five years developing the People’s Community Garden from an abandoned area of allotment site into the thriving community resource it is today. I am now focusing attention on Chantry Walled Garden, building up the horticultural and life skills programme for young adults with complex needs, and developing the site to provide opportunities for volunteers and older people. My job with ActivLives represented quite a career jump – as an English graduate, I worked for many years as a journalist in London and Melbourne before settling on the Essex/ Suffolk border with my husband and three children in 1995. While working as a sub editor at the East Anglian Daily Times, I decided to study for an RHS Diploma in Horticulture at Writtle College. I briefly ran a gardening business with a colleague, before landing a job with the Town & Bridge Project, now ActivLives, in 2008.
