Friendly Community Hub for people living with dementia and their carers

Are you a carer for a relative with dementia or a physical health condition, or do you live alone and feel isolated at home?

If so our ActivFriends weekly Hub could be just the place for both of you.

We offer a weekly opportunity to make new friends, take part in fun activities and enjoy a freshly cooked, 2 course lunch, supported by regular volunteers.

We are a very friendly group, and every week is different and offers the opportunity to meet up with likeminded people in a safe, relaxed environment.

The hub is supported by staff and volunteers who are happy to have a chat and provide advice if needed.

Meet the Staff

Location: Whitehouse Baptist Church Hall, Waterford Road, Ipswich, IP1 5NW

My daughter had a leaflet and that said they wanted us ActivFriends wanted to start up a dementia center up here she said to me, “Mum you’ve always enjoyed being with people.”  Because I used to do caring so I came up here and there was about eight or nine of us. We’d never met before but we came with the pastor of this church. And after about three months meetings and everything else we set up this group for people with dementia with their carers. All the volunteers, we really enjoyed being with all the people and people who came that gave the carers a bit of time to be with other people who cared for dementia sufferers. So they had a chance to get out for a day as well. And the people with dementia, they managed to join in with everything. It’s been a really lovely group all the years I’ve been here.

Case Study

Mrs P, a member of ActivFriends, was one of the first members of the hub when it started 10 years ago. She joined to support her husband who was diagnosed with dementia.

“My husband had dementia. He had six years of being here and he absolutely loved it,” she said.

She shared that when they started ActivFriends there were only around 10 members.

“When we started, we are not that many, maybe about 10. But gradually word got about and now we have a lot of members joining,” she said.

She happily mentioned fond memories with her husband at ActivFriends.

“He loved everybody here, the time and the food. And he liked the draw so he can win a prize,” she said with a smile.

The hub made a big difference in supporting her and her husband. “ActivFriends has helped me and my husband because there is always someone to talk to. We also had someone from Sue Ryder who met us here to be able to talk to and that helped me and my husband so much,” she said.

After her husband died, members encouraged her to continue being a member of ActivFriends. And she is now one of the longest members of the hub and still enjoying her time with the members she now call friends.
