Whatโ€™s at the Walled Garden?

Chantry Walled Garden is a heritage walled garden in a public park, with flower borders and glasshouses where we propagate and grow for our plant nursery.  Our base is Nursery Cottage, where there is an accessible courtyard garden with specially-designed beds for wheelchair users. At the walled garden you can learn skills relevant to the horticultural industry as well as enjoy maintaining a garden full of history.

  • Meet and greet members of the public and help them pick a plant for their garden

The nearest public car park is through the Park entrance on Hadleigh Road โ€“ turn right at top of driveway as you face the mansion. After parking, walk along the path round to right, past the stable blockkeeping the bowls pavilion on your left. Keep straight on, passing Ipswich Borough Council gate entrance (DISABLED ACCESS ONLY); you will walk along the outer wall of IBC yard with a flower border and green iron gate on right (ignore this entrance). Go through wooden orchard gate straight ahead, and you will find a boardwalk leading to a second green iron gate. Turn in here and turn right towards greenhouses. Follow shingle path round; if no-one is in greenhouses, go through double wooden gates on right, and turn left to Nursery Cottage.

I retired at 50 – it all
boils down to nothing. I felt a bit
useless; it feels as if you’ve been
chucked on the rubbish heap. So,
I started coming here. I knew
nothing about flowers – stuff them
in the ground and that’s it. I know
all about veg but nothing about
flowers. So, I’ve learnt such a lot
coming over here and finding out
what they need to grow. I like
seeing all the flowers out and
how pretty they are. It’s very
stimulating and good to work as a
team. It’s very peaceful.

โ€œIt gets me up in the mornings more. It relieves anxiety โ€“ I donโ€™t feel so depressed. Itโ€™s helped my confidence in the workplace โ€“ Iโ€™m not so angry. Iโ€™ve taken some knowledge back to the
work environment and itโ€™s given me confidence in community work and plant knowledge. Iโ€™ve got more self-esteem and confidence. Iโ€™ve met more people down here โ€“ I donโ€™t feel so isolated.โ€
