The tallest sunflower in the People’s Community Garden measured 2m 40cm in a neck on neck race to the tallest heights. The giant was entered by PCG volunteer Trevor Prentice but local brother and sister team Koda, Shalom and Tracey came a close second, winning the children’s category. Contestants won seeds kindly donated by Thompson & Morgan.
The day was also a great opportunity for visitors to sample freshly pressed apple juice using fruit from the garden’s orchard and to witness an exciting scything demonstration on the meadow carried out by Piotr. Visitors were also treated to a hive tour with our beekeeper Betsy and were able to purchase honey from the hives as well as tomato and courgette chutney made from our own garden produce which buyers could sample beforehand…which proved to be very popular!
Volunteers really helped out on the day with Pat and Linda manning the produce stall whilst Adrian and sister Sheryl raised money serving teas, coffees and cakes. Kev lit the clay oven and visitors sampled freshly harvested baked potatoes and roasted squash. All in all the day raised nearly £100.00 for the gardens and brought in lots of new visitors to the garden. So we would like, once again, to say a big thank you to all of the volunteers who helped out on the day!
