The third ActivLives Community Games, being held on Friday 24th November at the Gainsborough Sports Centre in Ipswich, is part of the ActivIpswich sports project for people who are over 50 years old and not currently active in regular sports or physical activity.
The initiative is a partnership between ActivLives and Ipswich Borough Council and is supported by Sport England and the National Lottery, it is designed to encourage older adults to get involved in sport.
“These events are so much fun”, said Mike McCarthy, ActivIpswich Project Manager. “The Community Games is an event for those people who thought that their sporting days were over! The Games are for anyone over the age of fifty, who would like to participate in accessible sport in a relaxed and fun atmosphere”.
The games, which are run on a multi-sport format, will include accessible sports such as kurling, boccia, target badminton, new age bowls, short tennis and ping pong, “All of the sports will be available in the form of a taster as well as having a competitive challenge involved for those who would like to participate”. This is sport for those that might not think of themselves as being particularly ‘sporty’”, explained Mike, “It is absolutely brilliant to see so many people getting involved with sport through events such as this”.The medals will be presented by local GB Paralympic Boccia player, Evie Edwards.
It is £3.00 to take part and refreshments will be available.
